Today, Vantage is launching support for Datadog Query Syntax in Business Metrics. Customers can now use their exact queries from Datadog directly within Vantage Business Metrics to import Datadog metrics and perform Unit Cost calculations in Cost Reports.
Previously, customers importing Datadog metrics as Business Metrics had to extract each component of their query — such as Metric Name, Filter, Space (tag) Aggregation, and Time Aggregation — and input them separately into Vantage. While this provided structure for creating queries, this process was time-consuming for customers that already had their queries created in Datadog, requiring them to manually reverse-engineer their Datadog queries to fit Vantage’s expected format. This gap limited how quickly teams could add Datadog metrics as Business metrics, and often made the integration feel more complex than necessary.
Now, with the launch of Datadog Query Syntax for Business Metrics, customers can now take the exact queries they already use in Datadog—like sum:system.cpu.user{availability-zone:us-east-1b} by {availabilityzone}.rollup(sum, daily)—and use them directly in Vantage’s Business Metrics UI. Vantage will handle parsing and ingestion automatically, using the query as-is to fetch metrics and align them with your cloud cost data. This enhancement dramatically reduces setup time, removes the need for manual translation, and ensures 1:1 accuracy with the metrics viewed in Datadog.
sum:system.cpu.user{availability-zone:us-east-1b} by {availabilityzone}.rollup(sum,daily)
To get started, head to Business Metrics within the Financial Planning section of the Vantage console. For more details, see the Business Metrics documentation.
1. What is being launched today?
Vantage is launching Datadog Query Syntax for Business Metrics, which allows customers to use their Datadog queries within Business Metrics to import data into Vantage.
2. Who can use Datadog Query Syntax within Business Metrics?
The customer is any Vantage customer that uses Datadog for monitoring and wants to utilize their Datadog metrics for Unit Cost calculation.
3. How much does this cost?
There is no additional cost for using Datadog Query Syntax within Business Metrics.
4. How do I create a Business Metric using Datadog Query Syntax within the Vantage Console?
Within the Financial Planning section of the Vantage console, select Business Metrics and choose “New Business Metric”. Give your Business Metric a name, and assign any cost reports you would like your Business Metric applied to. Within the Import Business Metrics section, choose “Import via Datadog”. You can then paste your query into the “Raw Query” filed, and select “Import Data”.
5. How do I create a Business Metric using Datadog Query Syntax through the API or Terraform?
API and Terraform support will be available soon for creating Business Metric using Datadog Query Syntax.
6. What types of Datadog queries are supported?
All standard Datadog metric queries are supported, including those with aggregations and label filters. Your query must include a rollup interval of daily, weekly, or monthly.
7. How do I get my raw query from Datadog?
From any Datadog Metrics Explorer, you can get the query by clicking on the code icon in the top right corner. You can also extract the query from any graph in Datadog by clicking the edit button on a dashboard graph, then getting the metric from there. You can find more information about the structure of Datadog metric queries in their documentation.
8. Can Vantage provide query syntax errors?
Vantage will enforce that metric rollup intervals are not more granular than daily. In addition, any formatting errors returned by Datadog will be surfaced in Vantage. It is recommended that you first view the metric within Datadog Metric Explorer to validate the syntax and data.
9. If I have existing Business Metrics configured to import data from Datadog, do I need to make any changes?
No changes are required for existing Datadog Business Metrics. Your existing Datadog queries are stored as raw queries in Vantage. When editing an existing business metric, the raw query field will be prefilled with the previously imported metric query.
10. Are there other ways that I can import Business Metrics other than using Datadog?
Yes, we also support custom Business Metrics upload via CloudWatch, API, and csv file. You can read more about this in our Business Metric documentation.
11. Where can I learn more or get help?
You can read more in our Business Metric documentation, or reach out to support@vantage.sh if you require any troubleshooting.
