Vantage Launches Datadog Support

by Vantage Team

Vantage integrates with Datadog

Today, Vantage announces support for Datadog costs in the Vantage console. Datadog represents Vantage’s fifth service provider in addition AWS, GCP, Snowflake, and Fastly. Vantage customers can now add a Datadog integration from their integrations page and Vantage will automatically ingest and visualize Datadog costs such as Container Monitoring, APM, and Logging within the Vantage console to view alongside infrastructure provider costs. Additional providers coming soon to Vantage include Azure, MongoDB Atlas and Databricks.

Customers are increasingly relying on multiple service providers in addition to their primary cloud infrastructure provider. It’s common for a single customer to leverage five or more different usage-based infrastructure providers to run their business. Managing the costs associated with these providers requires devoted engineering time to integrate, normalize and analyze data. In addition, a configuration change on one provider (such as AWS) can materially impact the costs of another (such as Datadog).

Customers can now easily connect Datadog and Vantage and will automatically receive read-only access to appropriate cost and usage APIs to begin ingesting Datadog cost data. Vantage will initially ingest the previous six months of historical data and refresh the newest cost data on a daily basis. Vantage will show daily costs by service as well as costs by service categories where applicable (Such as Log Management broken down by a category per retention time).

Datadog support is available to all users on Vantage, including users in the free tier. Note that Datadog costs will contribute to monthly tracked costs tier enforcement quotas. In the event that Datadog costs push you over your current tier monthly tracked costs, you may be required to upgrade your plan.

To add your Datadog costs to Vantage, head to the integrations page at https://console.vantage.sh/settings/integrations to begin ingesting cost data. To learn more about this integration, please read the Vantage documentation for Datadog.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is being launched today?

Today, Vantage is announcing general availability support for Datadog costs in the Vantage console. Users can now connect their Datadog account via OAuth and corresponding costs will automatically begin to be ingested and visualized within Vantage. Vantage will refresh cost data from Datadog on a daily basis to ensure data is always up-to-date.

2. Who is the customer?

This feature is available to all Vantage users, including users in the free tier. That being said, you must be a Datadog Pro or Enterprise tier customer. This feature is not available to customers in the Datadog free tier.

3. What is Datadog?

Datadog is an observability service for cloud applications, providing monitoring of servers, databases, tools, and services, through a SaaS-based data analytics platform.

3. How much does this cost?

There is no additional cost to Datadog support. However, Datadog costs will be included in quota tier enforcement. In the event that your Datadog costs push you over your current tier limit you may be prompted to upgrade. To see more details on pricing, please refer to the pricing page here: https://www.vantage.sh/pricing

4. How does Vantage technically integrate with Datadog?

Vantage uses a read only (scoped to usage_read) Datadog OAuth token. When connecting your Datadog account your user will need access to the usage_read scope in order to complete the connection.

This token is used to pull data from the usage metering endpoint (https://docs.datadoghq.com/api/latest/usage-metering/). The usage metering API allows you to get hourly, daily, and monthly usage across multiple facets of Datadog. This API is available to all Pro and Enterprise customers. Usage is only accessible for parent-level organizations.

5. What kind of services from Datadog can Vantage display?

Vantage will show line item cost data for at least the following Datadog services:

  • APM
  • Application Security Monitoring
  • Audit Trail
  • CI Visibility
  • CSPM
  • Database Monitoring
  • Incident Management
  • Infrastructure
  • Log Management
  • Network Monitoring
  • Observability pipelines
  • RUM
  • Sensitive Data Scanner
  • Serverless Monitoring
  • Synthetic Monitoring
  • Workload Security

6. I am a Vantage customer who has already connected my AWS and/or GCP account, can I see my Datadog accrued costs alongside existing AWS and GCP costs?

Yes. After adding a Datadog integration, Datadog will be available as a provider under Cost Report filters. Datadog costs will also automatically be included under the “All Resources” cost report.

7. Can I see costs on a per resource basis from Datadog?

Datadog does not currently support this functionality, but we are working with them to support this in the future for certain Datadog services.

8. What filtering logic is available for Datadog costs?

Cost data can be filtered by either service or organization.

9. How often does Datadog data refresh in the Vantage console?

Vantage will refresh at least once daily at 2AM UTC for Datadog. Datadog data is usually present within 24 hours, however Datadog can experience delays up to 72 hours.

10. What happens if I remove a Datadog integration?

If you decide to remove your Datadog integration from Vantage, all associated costs will be removed from the Vantage console associated with that OAuth Authorization.

11. Can I have multiple Datadog integrations?

Yes. There is no limit to the number of Datadog integrations you can add to Vantage. However, you only need to authenticate with your parent organization in order to see all organization costs.

12. Will Datadog costs be represented in the Overview page?

Yes. Datadog costs will be summarized in the “Provider Summary” section of the Overview page. Providers are sorted in descending order of accrued costs for the current month. Here is an example:

This is somewhat dependent upon the scale of your Datadog data but typically costs will be imported within 5 minutes.
